The Paper Conservator

Volume 9 of the Institute of Paper Conservation's annual journal,
The Paper Conservator, appeared in 1985. Subtitled 'Hyogu: The
Japanese tradition in picture conservation', this issue dealt solely
with conservation of Eastern art, materials, and techniques. Volume
9 has been in demand ever since its publication. As this issue is
now out of print, the Institute of Paper Conservation would like to
announce that the next issue of The Paper Conservator will return to
the subject of conservation of Asian art. IPC is delighted to have
Philip Meredith of the Asian Conservation Centre of the Museum of
Fine Arts, Boston, on board as co-editor.

This special issue will contain three papers on the mounting of
artworks from Japan, China and the Himalayas; their history,
formats, construction and materials. Other papers will describe the
tools used in mounting; painting materials and techniques;
preventive conservation, handling, display and storage of Asian
mountings; the adaptation of Asian conservation techniques for
Western paper conservation. A bibliography of related publications
will be included.

Specific contributions have been commissioned from specialists in
those areas, but the editors invite other contributions from
authors, to be discussed in advance of submission with either of the
editors.

The Institute of Paper Conservation looks forward to the publication
of this themed journal and the contribution it will make to the
study of paper/book conservation. Due to the specialist nature of
this issue, publication will be slightly later than usual, in
December 2005.
