September - November 2005 Professional Conservators in Practice 13-16 September 2005 Conservation Skills: Polychromed and Gilded Surfaces Fully inclusive residential fee UKP420 Non-residential fee UKP315 This practical course is designed for those with experience of gilding who wish to extend their understanding of particular making techniques. Participants will have the opportunity to create samples of decoration including press brokaat, pastiglia, lustrework and sgraffito. The techniques for cutting, casting, gilding and glazing, egg tempera, gesso and raised work, punch work and cabouchons are all demonstrated. The course will explore these combinations of precious metals and paint finishes and provide an opportunity to discuss and compare options for conservation. Participants may be painting or objects conservators, or gilding specialists, who have little opportunity to study traditional techniques and practice as they were done originally. Course Leader: Judith Wetherall 31 October - 3 November 2005 Conservation Skills: Sharpening Edge Tools Fully inclusive residential fee UKP420 Non-residential fee UKP315 This is a professional course for all conservators who use knives, blades and woodworking hand tools., providing students with the skills to produce high quality edges on such tools. Students are encouraged to bring their own tools for sharpening and will use a variety of abrasives including diamond stones, Japanese water stones and powered grindstones. We will spend extensive time on the bench to produce a variety of blades in Japanese Shiro Gami, and at the forge using carbon steel. The course also includes information on steel quality and heat treatment.
