Terminology

Can any help with the origin and or precise meaning of the phrase
"hand palmed plaster"? It occurs in the building specifications for
the 1926 Orpheum Theatre in Chicago without explanation. I have also
seen it in a list of interior wall treatments also without
explanation. Any help would be a help.
