The Museums of New Mexico

The Conservation Department and the New Mexico History Museum (NMHM)
of the Museums of New Mexico, Santa Fe, are seeking an experienced
textile conservator for up to three years, full-time, on a generous
grant provided by Save Americas Treasures.  The incumbent is
responsible for all conservation-related activities for a collection
of over 3000 costumes, accessories and textiles (CAT).  The
collection consists primarily of mid 19th century - mid 20th century
artifacts, with the costumes requiring the most attention.  The
entire collection is currently stored in a  temporary storage
facility while the new history museum is being constructed, which is
slated for completion in late 2007.  In the first year, the
incumbent will work in both the off-site storage facility and the
Conservation Laboratory.

Specific duties outlined in the grant include but are not limited to
the following:

    *   Perform a condition survey of the entire CAT collection.

    *   Train NMHM collections staff and volunteers in rehousing the
        CAT collection.

    *   Treat high priority artifacts from the collection.

    *   Consult on storing CAT collections in new storage facility
        in the new museum.

    *   Exhibit consultation for the CAT artifacts included in the
        inaugural exhibits in 2007.

The successful candidate should have:

    *   A Master's Degree with specialization in textile
        conservation OR a certificate from a recognized conservation
        program OR equivalent training and experience.

    *   3 years of textile conservation experience after training

The position requires the ability to work independently and in
multiple environments, good interpersonal skills, experience in
supervising non-conservators and a strong computer skills.

Salary range is $35,000 - $40,000, depending upon experience..
