The Conservation Unit at the National Library of New Zealand is
looking for an experienced paper conservator to join our team, which
includes five other conservators working in the book, archives,
sound and photographic materials speciality areas, as well as
technical and administrative support staff.  The Conservation Unit
is part of Preservation Services, which includes the Copying and
Digital Services unit supporting a range of photographic,
microfilming and digital imaging services and programs.

Senior Conservators at the National Library are responsible for
providing conservation management and treatment services for Library
collections, as well as leadership in documentary heritage
conservation in New Zealand through support for the programs of the
National Preservation Office and participation in professional
organisations and networks.

The Senior Paper Conservator has particular responsibility for the
co-ordination of conservation management programs for the graphic
arts and documentary heritage collections of the Alexander Turnbull
Library Drawings and Prints, Cartography, Ephemera and New Zealand
Cartoon Archive sections, as well as providing technical leadership
in treatment projects for works of art on paper and related media
formats. Activities include:

    *   Laboratory treatments, condition reports, materials testing,
        special packaging

    *   Exhibition support and preparation

    *   Contributing to the management and development of the
        laboratory and unit

    *   Training and supervision of technicians, contract workers
        and interns

    *   Training and advice for other National Library staff

    *   Working with curators and librarians to plan conservation
        programmes for collections

    *   Participation in disaster planning and salvage programs and
        projects

The person we are looking for in this position should have:

    *   At least 5 years practical experience in paper conservation

    *   Specific training or comparable experience in the
        conservation of art on paper and related flat paper formats

    *   Experience in the conservation management of collections

    *   An understanding of and support for the broader preservation
        perspective

    *   Enjoyment of the team approach to working relationships

    *   Good written and oral communication skills

Salary:  NZ$48,198 - $56,693. A relocation allowance is negotiable
for the successful candidate, should that individual be currently
living outside of New Zealand.
