Subject: Oil painting on plywood
An oil painting on ply wood has developed large fissures in the top layer. The fissures are running vertically and horizontally at three places. I am planing to remove the ground layers and transfer the top painted layer on a new ground. There are two major problem in the restoration of this painting: one, devising a technique to realign the edges of the fissures, and second what should be the best choice of material for the transfer of the painted layer on ply wood. A better quality of ply wood would be a natural choice of material for transfer but it would never be compatible with the fifty years old ply wood. Does any body have the experience in handling problem of restoration of the oil painting on ply wood?
