This workshop is designed to give a basic understanding of
photographic processes and the basic preservation of photograph
collections to collection managers and others responsible for
photograph collections. At the end of the 3 days the participant
will have a basic understanding of the most common photographic
processes. Participants will attain a general sense of the
requirements surrounding storage and exhibition. Deterioration of
photographs will be covered and the participant will have a basic
understanding of deterioration mechanisms in relation to handling,
storage and exhibition.

Topics covered

    Understanding of the identification of 19th and 20th Century
    processes including negatives

    Deterioration mechanisms and forms of deterioration

    Handling of photographs

    Basic storage and exhibition requirements and an introduction to
    storage materials and monitoring methods

    Group learning using case studies

Teacher: Clara von Waldthausen. Received an Undergraduate Degree in
Art History and Studio art (photography) at DePauw University,
Indiana, USA.Worked for 3 years in several museums as assistant
curator and became interested in conservation during this time
Received her degree in the Conservation of Photographic Materials
from the Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage in Amsterdam
(ICN) in 2000.Is an active member of: the photographic materials
group of the American Institute of Conservation,the ICOM-CC working
group photography conservation and the national association for
conservators (VAR) of the Netherland.

Target group: Technicians and assistants working in close contact
with photograph collections.
