Conference on the occasion of the fire in the Herzogin Anna Amalia
Bibliothek (HAAB) in Weimar in combination with a symposium

Due to the fire last autumn, the Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek
(HAAB) in Weimar has attracted the world's attention. The cultural
assets which is partly very affected has to be restored in the next
decades to the best of one's knowledge. Therefore, the Herzogin Anna
Amalia Bibliothek (HAAB) has decided to ask the International
Association of Book and Paper Conservators (IADA) for the
organisation of a conference in Leipzig. The aim is to acquire
systematically the current standard of experience and knowledge and
also the technical possibilities to create a basis for the
preparation of a preservation strategy. The conference "Tagung
HAAB", supplemented by a symposium of an international research
network (European thematic network 'Transitional Metals in Paper'),
will take place from 2nd to 4th of June 2005 in Leipzig with the
friendly assistance of the Verband der Restauratoren (VdR).

The lectures of the conference and the symposium will include the
following questions:

    *   reparation of a preservation and conservation strategy after
        a fire

    *   preservation of vellum, paper, leather which is damaged by
        heat, water and fire

    *   digitisation of burned documents

    *   influence of extinguish agent additives on the permanence of

    *   fight against burnt smell and other concomitants
    *   precautionary measures in case of a disaster / emergency

    *   fire prevention

The lectures will be given in English or German and will be
interpreted simultaneously.

The audience will be composed of international experts. Besides
conservators and scientists also representatives of important
international libraries, archives and museums will attend this
conference. An exhibitor forum will exist as well where many service
providers will present themselves. On Thursday evening, the
exhibition "Die Bibliothek brennt" ("The library is burning") of the
Berlin artist Wolfgang Nieblich will be inaugurated by the ZFB
Stiftung on the occasion of the conference at the venue. On Sunday,
June 5. 2005, you will have the possibility to visit the Herzogin
Anna Amalia Bibliothek in Weimar or the Zentrum fur Bucherhaltung
(Centre for Book Conservation) in Leipzig.
