Pre-call for Papers MIP Conference
Metals in Paper / 2nd International Iron Gall Ink Meeting
January 2006

The MIP--European Thematic Network Metals in Paper is organizing a
final network Conference in Newcastle upon Tyne (UK), January 23-27,
2006. This conference is also the successor to the 1st Iron Gall Ink
Meeting, which was held at Northumbria University in 2000.

The meeting will take about 2-3 days and the exact dates will be
published soon at <URL:http://www.miponline.org>.

The aim of the network is to respond collectively to specific
threats to European paper based cultural heritage. These risks
include the deterioration, conservation and storage of paper and
ligno-cellulosic objects that have been affected by e.g.
metal-tannin corrosion throughout, many of which are stored in
archives, libraries and museums.

The aim of the final MIP conference is to present the
state-of-the-art in the field of the four defined theme-groups:

    1. Fundamental scientific aspects of paper degradation. This
will focus primarily on diagnostic and analytical
techniques, studies of degradation processes (including
endogenous and exogenous factors), and methodologies for
        paper stability evaluation.

    2. Chemical aspects of active conservation. This will include
conventional conservation methods as well as the use of
        inhibitors and deacidification techniques

    3. Physical aspects of active conservation. This will include
paper splitting, strengthening, leaf casting and cleaning

    4. Preventive conservation issues: This will include
environmental aspects of storage, boxing etc.

We welcome papers, poster and exhibitors for this conference.

If you are intending to submit a paper/poster related to the aim of
our network you are welcome to send your abstract (500 words
maximum). This can be send to info<-a t->miponline< . >org or
john.havermans<-a t->tno< . >nl or jean.brown<-a t->unn< . >ac< . >uk.

The scientific and technical committee will referee all incoming
papers.
