NYPL appointment

Shelly Smith has been appointed Head of Conservation Treatment for
the Research Libraries of The New York Public Library, effective
June 6, 2005. In this role she will manage the Barbara Goldsmith
Conservation Lab, one of four program units in the Barbara Goldsmith
Preservation Division.

Presently Ms. Smith is a conservator of rare books and manuscripts
at the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts, a
non-profit regional lab located in Philadelphia. Previously she
worked as the rare books and bound manuscripts conservator at the
Huntington Library and as a conservator in private practice. Also,
she has worked at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill,
University of Texas at Austin, Washington State Archives, and the
Smithsonian Institution.

Ms. Smith is a professional associate and active member of the
American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works
(AIC) and is the secretary/treasurer for its Book and Paper Group.
She received her MLIS and conservation degree from the Preservation
and Conservation Studies for Libraries and Archives program at the
University of Texas at Austin Graduate School of Library and
Information Science.

Ms. Smith will be a valuable addition to the staff of the
Preservation Division, bringing a great deal of expertise, energy,
and vision as the Goldsmith Conservation Lab renews a path of growth
in service to the Research Libraries.
