Position at Wisconsin Veterans Museum

From: Angela Andres <angelamandres<-a>
Date: Wednesday, April 20, 2005
The Research Center at the Wisconsin Veterans Museum in Madison,
Wisconsin is looking for a paper and book conservator, to start in
August 2005. Prior hands-on experience in paper and book repair and
conservation is essential; additional study on the subject is also
desirable. The conservator is responsible for organizing, stocking,
and maintaining the Research Center's conservation lab; ordering
supplies and materials; working with archivists to determine
appropriate conservation treatments; and performing a wide variety
of basic to advanced repairs on the archive's collection of books,
papers, manuscripts, photographs, serials, maps, and posters.
Treatments most commonly applied to archive materials include
cleaning, flattening, and mending of paper items; recasing of books;
creating custom-made Mylar sleeves for photographs; and constructing
protective enclosures such as phase boxes and clamshell boxes.

The Research Center lab is modest in size and relatively new; the
right candidate will find this position presents a challenging and
rewarding opportunity to test their skills, expand the lab's
potential, and work with the truly unique materials in the Research
Center collections.

This is a part-time, contractual position; the conservator will not
be an employee of the State of Wisconsin. Working hours, days, and
rate of pay are flexible and may be determined by the conservator in
cooperation with the Archives Collection Manager. As a contractor,
the conservator may be able to deduct work-related travel expenses
and other costs. This position could be ideal for someone willing to
commute from locations in Southern Wisconsin or Northern Illinois,
or for a recent graduate from a course of study in conservation who
is looking to gain valuable experience in the field.
