Publication on photograph coatings

The Photographic Materials Group of the American Institute for
Conservation is proud to announce the advance sales of its new book,
Coatings on Photographs: Materials, Techniques, and Conservation,
made possible through the generous support of the Andrew W. Mellon
Foundation, the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, and the exceptional
efforts of its volunteer authors and other PMG members.

Edited by Constance McCabe, this full-color publication includes 25
chapters on the topic of coatings on photographs from the nineteenth
century to the present. Contributions by 42 leading photograph
conservators, scholars, and scientists in North America and Europe
address newly discovered information regarding coatings on
daguerreotypes, autochromes, negatives, salted paper, albumen,
platinum, and gelatin prints, and contemporary photographic
materials.

Case studies detailing the finishing techniques of photographs by
Gustave Le Gray, Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen, Lewis Hine, and
Ansel Adams, and other prominent photographers offer observations
relating to the preservation of their works of art.  A comprehensive
chapter of interest to all conservators focuses on the examination
and analysis of coatings using non-destructive techniques.
