Questioning the Boundaries of Ethnography:
The Presentation and Collection Care of Ethnographic and Folk
Material

Ethnography Section AGM

Over the last few decades there has been growing controversy over
the appreciation of ethnographic museums and the preservation of
their collections. Many Western Ethnographic museums have focused on
foreign cultures but from the viewpoint of their own culture.
However other ethnographic museums also represent the cultural
heritage of their home country, region or community.

The 2005 Ethnography Section Forum will consider these museums'
collections, looking at the roles and responsibilities of museum
professionals and local communities involved in their interpretation
and preservation.

The day will include a tour of the museum site and seven very
interesting papers presenting different perspectives on:

    Ethnography in Wales

Haddon's String Figures: the boundaries of preservation,
    presentation and performance

A community exhibition in a museum in Addis Ababa

    The Maori community in London

The display and interpretation of traditional Norwegian culture
    in Norway's Folk Museums

Changing views on garments deliberately concealed in buildings

    Rural history collections in Britain

The registration fees will be:
    Institute of Conservation members: UKP35
    Non-members: UKP45
    Student members: UKP15
    Student non-members: UKP20

Some student bursaries are available.
