Subject: Library Collections Conservation Discussion Group
Since the information in the AIC Annual Meeting catalog is quite brief, we wanted to provide you with more details about the Library Collections Conservation Discussion Group (LCCDG) to assist you in planning your AIC schedules. LCCDG will feature two topics at AIC's 2005 Annual Meeting in Minneapolis. First on the agenda is an update from the AIC Collections Care Task Force. Julie Reilly, Associate Director and Chief Conservator, Gerald R. Ford Conservation Center, Nebraska State Historical Society, will present a brief history of the task force and its findings to date. The task force was asked to define the role of conservation technicians in an institutional setting. Members also investigated the range of tasks that technicians perform, and discussed the skills that are required to perform those tasks. Our second agenda item is an open discussion entitled "Self Preservation." Institutions are asking collections conservators to wear many hats. We are required to be not only conservators, but administrators, managers, trainers, and authors. How do we balance workplace demands with our own professional interests and needs? What motivates us? How do we maintain enthusiasm over the long-term when faced with more "other duties as required" and less bench time? We welcome your ideas and input and anticipate a lively exchange!
