Positions at Andrea Pitsch Conservation

From: Andrea Pitsch <apnyc<-a>
Date: Friday, March 18, 2005
Assistant Conservator, Works on Paper
Conservation Technician, Works on Paper
Andrea Pitsch Conservation

These permanent positions are available in the next few months; the
starting dates are flexible. Candidates seeking a long-term tenure
will be favored.

Located in midtown Manhattan, APC has provided superior paper
conservation and consultation services since 1985 to an
internationally known clientele of museums, artists' estates,
galleries, and corporate and private collections. The treatments
undertaken at APC must adhere to the exacting standards of the New
York art community, which depends on us to provide the highest level
of service.

Treatments are interesting and varied; objects include original
works of art on paper, fine and historic prints, historic maps,
photographs, and parchment. Approaches range from routine
stabilization to complex treatments of idiosyncratic contemporary
objects.

The Assistant Conservator position will emphasize hands-on treatment
of a wide range of objects. Responsibilities will also include
examination, tracking workflow, interacting with clients, and
generally assisting the chief conservator with studio maintenance
and deadlines. Some familiarity with computer databases would be
helpful. The job will provide experience with technical and creative
problem-solving, curatorial issues, and administration. The
challenges and rewards of the position are substantial and will
leave plenty of room for individual interests and professional
growth. Assistance will be available to attend workshops of mutual
interest.

Assistant Conservator applicants should have a degree in art
conservation or equivalent, plus two or more years' experience with
paper treatments. The candidate should be self-motivated, willing to
try new methods and materials, think creatively, and desire to be a
valued team member.

The Technician position can be full-time or part-time. Technician's
duties will include surface cleaning and mending, tape removal,
hinging, preparing and packing works on paper for exhibition and
travel, some light office work, and generally assisting conservators
with treatment processes and studio organization.

Technician applicants should have one or more years' experience with
hands-on treatment of works on paper such as art or library
materials, specifically mending and surface cleaning of fragile
papers. Also required are good manual dexterity, close attention to
detail, an ability to problem-solve, and an interest in the visual
arts.

Salaries will be competitive and commensurate with ability. Please
direct letter of interest and resume to Andrea Pitsch at
