    $3,761 - $4,572 Biweekly
    $45,136 - $54,860 Annually

Schedule:  Full-time

Location:  San Francisco Public Library, Technical Services
Division, Preservation
(Currently located in the Main Library.  Technical Services will
move to 190-9th Street in 2005.)

Appointment Type and Schedule: Provisional Full-time  The
provisional appointee will be required to succeed in a Civil Service
Examination process for this class in order to be considered for a
permanent appointment to this position.

Position Description: Under supervision of the Assistant Chief of
Technical Services, the Senior Book Repairer manages the Library's
Preservation program which consists of the Book Repair and Bindery
Preparation departments. The essential functions of this job
include: establishing and maintaining communication and effective
partnerships with department and program managers throughout the
library system for the physical care and maintenance of the
Library's collections; supervising, training and evaluating
departmental staff; ordering and maintaining supplies of materials
and equipment required for book repair operations; managing the
commercial binding budget and the equipment and supplies budget for
the book repair program; evaluating incoming materials to determine
the need for repair or binding; presenting workshops and programs
for public service staff on simple book repair techniques; restoring
and repairing damaged books and other library materials; assisting
in the recovery of materials in the event of water damage, fire or
other problem conditions; monitoring selected environments for
optimal preservation of library books and materials; keeping
informed of technical developments, evaluating supplies, equipment
and changing technology for improved binding and repairs; compiling
commercial bindery and book repair statistics.

Minimum Qualifications:

    1.  Experience:  Three (3) years of experience in binding,
        conservation, preservation or restoration of books and
        similar printed materials in a library setting; and

    2.  Ability to use a computer and computer keyboard; and

    3.  Ability to left and carry fifty (50) pounds. (Verification
        of ability will be required at time of interview)

Work Schedule:  The normal work schedule for this position is Monday
through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (May include evenings and
weekends when necessary.)

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    *   Working familiarity with Library Binding Institute standards
        related to the binding of library materials.

    *   Knowledge of library book and paper conservation practices
        as used in the field of library and book repair

    *   Ability to supervise and promote teamwork

    *   Ability to analyze workflow and procedures

    *   Flexibility and adaptability to change

    *   Knowledge of or ability to learn MS Word, Excel and Outlook

verify required experience needed to qualify.  Experience

Current SFPL Employees: Current employees of the San Francisco
Public Library who meet the minimum qualifications based entirely on
their SFPL experience need not submit verification.  City and County
employees will receive credit for the duties of the class to which
appointed.  If the qualifying experience is a combination of SFPL
experience and outside experience then the outside experience must
be verified.  Outside experience verification must be on the
employer's letterhead and must show the applicant, job title(s),
duties performed, dates of service and must be signed by the
employer.

Verification Waiver: Verification may be waived if impossible to
obtain.  Applicants must submit a signed statement explaining why
verification cannot be obtained.  Waiver requests may be considered
on a case-by-case basis.

Failure to submit the required verification or request for waiver
may result in the rejection of the application
