Paper strengthening

I have some books that are 18th Century and are to be deacidified by
both washing aqueously and by spray techniques.  Some of the pages
are very brittle indeed Do you know if there is an alternative
method to increase mechanical strength of brittle book pages other
than tissue laminating?
