Document repair tape

From: Christopher Gray <methistory<-a>

We have been using University Products' "Document Repair Tape"
(acid-free tissue, acrylic adhesive) for minor repairs on early 20th
century drawings (of no "artistic" value, often structural drawings)
for several years. Recently, an archivist in New York--who works
with the same kind of materials, and who has used this tape--said
that he had discontinued using this tape because of "problems".

Aside from the obvious problem of irreversibility, is anyone on the
list aware of actual damage evident from this kind of tape? Using
it offers a "real world" solution to large collections of "everyday"
drawings.
