Cleaning galleries

Our museum is looking to revise its gallery cleaning procedures. We
have a number of galleries with historic furniture and other
unprotected objects on modern hardwood flooring. Until now, the
floor is regularly cleaned using a large handheld waxing/polishing
machine which even in the hands of an experienced operator poses the
risk of a serious accident when the machine, out of control for just
an instant, hits for example a table leg. Moving the furniture
before the cleaning would be equally undesirable because some of the
more fragile objects would suffer from being moved regularly. I
would be interested to hear what solutions have been adopted by
other institutions in a similar situation, and at which intervals,
if indeed, you undertake full cleaning and polishing of your wooden
floors.
