Fluorescent tubes and UV

I would like information on the relative pros and cons of shielding
or sheathing individual fluorescent tubes to protect collections
from ultraviolet radiation vs. installing a UV-protective "lens",
which I understand to be the piece of plastic that is flush with the
ceiling tiles below the lights in some fixture set-ups.  Are these
lenses as effective as individual sheaths?
