Acquiring and Siting Classical Art: Dialogue between Curator and Conservator American Institute for Conservation Workshop at the Atlanta CAA Meeting Michael C. Carlos Museum, Emory University Friday, Feb. 18, noon-1:30 Transportation will be arranged to and from the conference; workshop participants should be able to attend both the morning and afternoon sessions. This is a gallery-based workshop. Jasper Gaunt, curator and Renee Stein, conservator, will discuss evidence of manufacture, questions of authenticity, as well as extent of cleaning and compensation for display in the Carlos Museum's recently reinstalled Classical galleries. Examples may include a black-figure ceramic krater which raised questions about authenticity, a bronze hydria studied for manufacturing techniques, and a Hellenistic marble sculpture which presented challenges for cleaning and compensation. The workshop will emphasize visual examination and encourage participation. Attendance will be strictly limited, by pre-reservation. Priority will be given to a balance of academic art historians, curators, conservators and working artists.
