Short Professional Conservation Courses at West Dean College, near Chichester April-June 2005 Professional Conservators in Practice 26-29 April 2005 The Conservation of Ship Models Course Leaders: Hazel Newey and Steve Conway Designed for those working with maritime collections, the course provides an opportunity for intensive study in this specialized area. Fully residential fee: UKP420 10-13 May 2005 Conservation Skills: Fibre Identification Course Leader: Jennifer Barnett (International Historical Textiles Consultant) This course trains participants in the examination of the most important natural and synthetic fibres found in textiles: cotton, linen, jute, hemp, silk, hair/wool, viscose, acetate, polyester, nylon and acrylic. While the emphasis is on practical work, essential theory will also be covered. The setting of West Dean College in extensive gardens gives the chance to see living fibre in plants and there will also be the opportunity to see and study raw fibres 'on the hoof'. Fully residential fee: UKP420 7-10 June 2005 The Conservation of Leather Course Leaders: Roy Thomson and Aline Angus (Leather Conservation Centre) Concentrating on where leather is used on period furniture, upholstery and wallcoverings and in interiors, as well as library materials, the course explores the history and use of leather and also reviews current conservation practice. There are plenty of demonstrations and practical sessions as well as lectures by two leading practitioners. Different methods of analysis commonly undertaken as part of such research are outlined, with reference to case studies.
