Project Conservator
Broughton House
The National Trust for Scotland

Project Conservator - Broughton House (based Edinburgh and
Kirkcudbright) Job Purpose: To organise and supervise the cleaning
of the building and the collections of Broughton House prior to
reinstatement; and to assist in the unpacking and reinstatement of
the collections.

Brief Context: The Trust took over management of Broughton House in
1994 from the Hornel Trust, and it was immediately obvious that
major works were required to ensure the long-term conservation of
the building and the collections. Following years of planning and
fund-raising, an application was made to the Heritage Lottery Fund
in 2002, and the grant was provisionally approved in January 2003,
with the project beginning in May 2003. A Project Conservator was
appointed at the beginning of the project to oversee the packing,
transportation and storage of the collections, and to coordinate the
programme of remedial conservation. She has since been promoted
within the Trust, and a new Project Conservator is therefore
required to organise the return of the collections, and to complete
the unpacking and conservation cleaning elements of the project.
S/he will work closely with the Trust's Curators to improve the
presentation and interpretation of the property, returning it as far
as possible to its appearance in Hornel's later years.

Qualifications and experience: A degree or recognised qualification
in conservation, with experience of remedial and preventive
conservation in an historic-house/museum context. Must have some
experience of conservation planning and project delivery - including
the supervision of volunteers and contractors, as well as 'hands-on'
involvement. Must be IT/administratively self-sufficient and have a
genuine enthusiasm for Scotland's heritage.

Terms: Fixed term ending 29 April 2005. Salary UKP18,573
Closing Date: Monday 31 January 2005
