Call for papers

The third conference of the twentieth century furniture research
group will be held in High Wycombe, UK on November 11th and 12th
2005.

The conference title is '1951 - 1970: Opportunity, innovation and the
explosion in furniture design'

This two day conference will review the period 1951-1970, a period
which saw furniture designers reacting to post-war freedom in the
use of materials, and was typified in the Festival of Britain in
London. This period showed an increase in the development and use of
plastics and an explosion in the development of a wide variety of
materials to be used in contemporary design work. The conference will
concentrate to a great extent on the furniture production from a
number of firms within the High Wycombe area, including G-Plan (E.
Gomme) and Ercol, whose records are held within the institution and
form the basis of the High Wycombe Furniture Archive. The conference
will also incorporate a visit to the current Ercol factory for all
participants. The conference will also alert furniture collections
and conservators to the issues surrounding treatment and management
of furniture made from modern materials, and will provide guidance
through case studies. It will also describe and evaluate the
historical evolution and artistic intent of those pivotal furniture
designers engaged with post modernism. The conference is the third in
a series which examines furniture design within the twentieth
century and provides an international forum for issues of furniture
design, history and conservation. The series aims to critically
review furniture historiography through the broader time-frame and
complete chronology of the issues involved in furniture design
throughout this period.
