Position at Bristol Museum, Galleries and Archives Service

From: Ticca Ogilvie <to007a3988_2>
Date: Thursday, November 18, 2004
Assistant Conservator, Antiquities
Bristol Museum, Galleries and Archives Service
Bristol
Grade 10
Scale points 30-34
UKP22,599 - UKP25,407
Ref. No. 9357

Bristol Museum is searching for a highly motivated conservator to
carry out a broad range of duties: preventive and remedial
conservation of objects, preparation and administration of loans,
materials testing, answering of enquiries, specification for mounts,
interpretation of environmental data, storage improvements, etc.

Working under the Conservator of Antiquities, you will have
responsibility for the care of objects from across many of the
curatorial disciplines of the Museum and Art Gallery. Special
focus, however, is likely to be on work for the redisplay of the
Egyptian galleries.

You will work with a wide variety of museum staff and outside
specialists and must enjoy using your considerable communication
skills to forge constructive relationships with them all. You must
also welcome the responsibility of managing your own time and
devising your own solutions to conservation problems.

You will have a degree from a recognised conservation training
programme, or commensurate experience, and ideally two to three
years post training experience. We seek an individual with a
creative and flexible approach to problem solving, along with a
broad experience of historic and ancient materials and their
conservation. Experience within a museum work environment will be
seen as an advantage.

Bristol is a dynamic, ambitious and multi-cultural European city,
acknowledged as a centre of cultural excellence. Bristol City
Council is transforming its cultural facilities with investment in
its Museums, Galleries and Archives Service thanks partly to the
Renaissance in the Regions initiative and through major lottery
funded projects which include the creation of a new Museum of
Bristol. As assistant conservator you will be part of a growing and
lively conservation department which values colleagues with a
co-operative and positive outlook.

In the first instance this post is offered as a fixed term contract
to 31 March 2006 but with expectation of continuation for a further
two years, or possible establishment as a permanent post. The post
is based at the City Museum and Art Gallery and is for a 37 hour
week.
