Course on gems and jewellery

Two short courses of interest to conservators, will be held in
central London in Spring 2005, organized by Gem-A--The Gemmological
Association of Great Britain, a world leader in gem and
jewellery-related training. Both are led by Dr. Jack Ogden, a
well-known specialist in the historical development of jewellery
materials and techniques. Because of the hands-on sessions,
participants are limited to 16 on each course.

Gemstones for curators and conservators
Monday 7th March 7, 2005

Does your work involve ancient or antique gem materials? This
one day course will cover:

    The history and characterisation of the gemstones and their
    simulants as used in jewellery from ancient to recent times.

    How gemstones can be identified and how such knowledge helps
    in assessments relating to dating, authentication and
    conservation practice.

    A hands-on session using basic gemmological instruments

(No previous gemmological training will be assumed.)

Two day Course: A Brief History of Jewellery Manufacturing Techniques
April, 14-15, 2005

This two-day seminar that covers the history of jewellery
manufacture from the earliest times up to the end of the 19th
century. With the main focus on gold jewellery, the course will
cover the development of jewellery manufacturing and assembling
techniques, and how these affected design. The course includes a
hands-on session with ancient jewellery components from an extensive
teaching collection. Participants will gain a good basic
understanding of jewellery technology in the past, and how this
knowledge helps in assessments of dating and authentication.
