The Columbia University Libraries Conservation Department seeks
qualified applicants for this permanent, full-time union position
with health insurance and other benefits.  Available immediately.

Description of duties:  Under the supervision of the Head
Conservator, performs both simple and complex conservation repairs
on bound materials from the Columbia University Libraries general
collections, including pre-1850 imprints and other items of
artifactual interest.  Under the guidance of the Special Collections
Conservator, assists with stabilization of rare materials, including
minor and batch treatments, making protective enclosures for single
items and/or collections, cutting mats and making cradles for
exhibits.  Also participates in environmental monitoring program,
disaster preparedness/response and recovery for all libraries. Other
duties as assigned.

Qualifications:  High school diploma required, BA/BS preferred.  One
year full-time experience in binding and repair of multi-section
case-bound books; previous experience in a library conservation
setting desirable. Must have demonstrated ability to handle fragile
and rare materials with care and have general knowledge of
conservation principles and ethics. Must be able to work
independently when necessary; good communications and interpersonal
skills essential.  Basic computer skills (word processing, data
entry) will be helpful.  Must be willing to work on a wide range of
materials, performing detailed and occasionally repetitive tasks.
Requires operation of specialized equipment (e.g. ultrasonic welder,
fume hood, guillotine cutter) and the use of various chemicals and
solvents with appropriate protective equipment.  Applicants are
encouraged to provide a portfolio of previous conservation or
bookbinding work at the time of interview.
