Workshop on porcelain restoration

Workshop in the use of tinted fillings for the restoration of
porcelain.
April 20-22, 2005
Price: 350-400 Euros.

This technique has been developed in England over the last 10 years
of so. Through the use of self-prepared tinted epoxy fillers it is
possible to restore porcelain to a high esthetical standard by
simple filling techniques.

Program
Day 1

Morning:

1.5 hours: Lecture:

    *   Introduction to porcelain restoration--cleaning and
        preparation of objects for filling

    *   Introduction to the materials used for tinted fillings.
        Epoxy materials, pigments, and colouring media. Also,
        research and health and safety aspects.

1.5 hours: Demonstration:

    *   Looking at different porcelain types.

    *   Looking at samples of this technique.

    *   Demonstration of techniques used to make and colour filling
        materials

    *   Demonstration of sanding and polishing materials and
        techniques.

Afternoon:

3 hours: Practical lesson: Making and colouring filling
materials--testing techniques on prepared samples.

Day 2

1.5 hours: Lecture: Filling larger areas--the making of "sandwich
fillings".

1.5 hours Demonstration of sanding and polishing techniques
Afternoon:

3 hours: Practical lesson: continuation of previous days
samples--testing of sanding materials.

Day 3

1 hour: Lecture: replacing missing decoration on coloured fillings
retouching with epoxies.

1.5 hours Demonstration retouching and glazing techniques Afternoon:

3 hours: Practical lesson: continuation of samples. Testing
retouching techniques.

Provided with the course:

    *   a reader of articles
    *   Syllabus
    *   Sample material for the self-made tests

Teacher:

    Kate van Lookeren Campagne
    Tutor in Ceramic and Glass conservation at the Netherlands
    Institute for cultural Heritage, Amsterdam and Independent
    Conservator. Active member of the ceramic group of ICOM-CC.

Place: Barcelona.
