Collections Manager Merchant's House Museum Collections Manager The Merchant's House Museum, located in New York City, is seeking an experienced part-time collections manager. Built in 1832, the elegant row house and collections remain virtually intact from the original owners. The successful candidate will be highly motivated and possess excellent organizational and writing skills. Requirements include a degree in museum studies or related field and 2 years of collections management experience. Knowledge of Past Perfect is preferred but not required. Responsible for all aspects of collections care and management, including cataloging, research, storage, conservation/preservation, and day-to-day maintenance of objects. The primary focus of this position is on the collection itself, to the exclusion of issues of interpretation. Will complete development of a quality collections care and management system, building on what has already been accomplished. Work involves: * conducting research, cataloging, and photographing the collection; * creating and maintaining computerized collections records; * managing the storage, retrieval, and location of collections; * developing and maintaining a disaster preparedness plan covering the museum; * overseeing the conservation/preservation of objects in the collection; and * conducting research for temporary and permanent exhibits. Responsibilities also include supervising interns in collections-related projects, such as re-housing textiles or researching ceramics, to ensure that they are accomplished in a professional manner consistent with standards established by the American Association of Museums and with the needs of the museum itself.
