This is one of two second-level management posts under the Head of the Service. The P&CC Service has been reformed recently from its previous role for the Bodleian Library, to implement a modern preservation strategy for the integrated library services, currently occupying 38 sites including the 400 year old Bodleian central site and state of the art modern libraries. The new and exciting changes at OULS include a radical new approach to staffing conservation and preservation activities, involving greater profile, responsibility, status and career opportunities for conservators and technicians. The post-holder will work in partnership with a second Principal Conservator, responsible for interventive conservation operations and project planning (awaiting recruitment). These two, with the Head of Service, will form the Service's management team. S/he will also lead a core team of preventive conservators and conservation technicians, and direct the activities of other Service staff carrying out preventive operations under a matrix management system. The successful applicant is likely to be a conservator or preservation manager with significant experience in establishing preventive conservation strategies for collections. Applicants can be from any collections-related preservation background, although experience of libraries or archives collections is likely to be helpful. Innovation and creative thinking are sought, with strong evidence of staff and resources management experience, and a flair for providing modern customer-focussed services. A thorough knowledge of environmental management will be essential, as will be computer literacy in standard word-processing and spreadsheet software and some specialist environmental systems. Knowledge and experience of building management and the problems of providing services in Grade 1 historic buildings will be a distinct advantage. The post-holder will be expected to hold ACR accreditation, but applicants eligible and ready to apply for accreditation will also be considered.
