Fumigated books from China

One of our libraries has received some books from China that have a
very strong odor and the cataloguers have had a reaction to the
materials. The assumption is that they have been fumigated. We have
involved the Environmental Health and Safety department and they are
doing some tests.  Has anyone had a similar experience with
shipments from China and could they share them?
