Short-term Fellowships with the Conservation Department of the
National Museum of the American Indian, Cultural Resources Center,
Suitland, MD.
January 3, 2005 - March 11, 2005

The National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) is offering two
ten-week fellowships in ethnographic artifact and textile
conservation funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The
Conservation Department and NMAI's Cultural Resources Center in
Suitland, MD (Metro DC area) is the work site. Projects will focus
primarily on the survey and treatment of artifacts chosen for
exhibit at NMAI's facilities in New York and Washington, DC or for
loan. The projects are intended to cultivate practical skills as
well as to foster a solid understanding of the contexts of material
culture, the philosophies of conservation at NMAI, and the ethics of
the conservation profession. Museum programming involves
collaboration with Native Peoples in the development of appropriate
methods of care for, and interpretation of, their cultural
materials.

Candidates who are recently graduated from a recognized conservation
program and demonstrate a career interest in the conservation of
material culture of indigenous peoples of North, Central and South
America will be especially welcome.

Applications postmarked no later than September 1, 2004 must
include: a cover letter explaining the candidate's interests and
intent in applying for the project, curriculum vitae including basic
biographical information with current, permanent and email
addresses, telephone numbers, three letters of recommendation (at
least two from professional contacts), and transcripts of
undergraduate and graduate work (cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better is
expected).

Notifications will be sent by October 1, 2004. It is hoped that
notice this far in advance will be sufficient for chosen individuals
to obtain any necessary visas, but this cannot be guaranteed by the
Smithsonian or NMAI. The 10-week project includes a generous
stipend. Dates for the Fellowships are January 3, 2005 - March 11,
2005. NMAI is an equal opportunity employer.
