Professional Conservators in Practice courses at West Dean College, near Chichester, West Sussex Conservation Skills: Edge-Tool Sharpening 9-12 November 2004 The Edge Tool Sharpening course provides students with the skills to produce high quality edges on knives, chisels, plane and plough blades. Students are encouraged to bring their own tools for sharpening and will use a variety of abrasives including diamond stones, Japanese water stones and powered grindstones. We will spend extensive time on the bench to produce a variety of blades in Japanese Shiro Gami, and at the forge using carbon steel. The course also includes information on steel quality and heat treatment. This is a professional course for all conservators who use knives, blades and woodworking hand tools. Course Leader: Bernard Allen Residential fee: UKP420 Conservation of Hinterglasmalerei 7-10 December 2004 Reverse-painted glass paintings are generally known by the German term Hinterglasmalerei. This course gives the chance to learn about the history and technology of this art form and give an understanding of the deterioration and conservation/restoration of reverse-painted glass. Each participant will create a reverse painting on glass using traditional methods, the objects made will then be damaged in order to test conservation materials and techniques. Participants are encouraged to bring their own study objects or fragments for discussion.
