Assistant Conservator, Pacific Collections The Field Museum. <URL:http://www.fieldmuseum.org> The Field Museum seeks a conservator to undertake the examination, documentation, and treatment of objects in the Anthropology Department's Pacific collections. Duties include: 1. Documents, examines, and performs conservation treatments and procedures on objects in the collections. Conducts surveys of the collections, under supervision, assessing the condition of specimens and determining conservation needs. 2. Provides conservation advice to Anthropology, Exhibits, and other Museum staff to establish, monitor, and maintain proper environmental conditions in storerooms, exhibits, and work areas as well as to prescribe, review, and upgrade methods and materials used for the storage and packing of artifacts. 3. Assists in the daily operation of the conservation laboratories, including the supervision of students, interns, and volunteers. 4. Performs research leading to improved methods, materials, and procedures for conservation, storage, and exhibit of specimens; disseminate results in publications and oral presentations. 5. Assists with conservation grant proposal preparation. 6. Attends professional meetings, workshops, and other activities to keep current in the field of conservation and enhance professional knowledge and skills. 7. May (under certain circumstances and with supervisory consent) perform conservation work for in-coming, out-going and in-house temporary exhibits including conditioning and overseeing installation. 8. Other duties as assigned by supervisor. The Assistant Conservator works under the supervision of the Chief Conservator in consultation with the Curator for Oceanic Ethnology and Archaeology, the Head of Collections, and the Department Chair. Candidates must have a graduate degree in Conservation or equivalent training. A specialization in objects conservation and experience with anthropological collections, particularly Oceanic collections, is preferred. Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills, and demonstrated conservation knowledge and skills are required. This is a one-year term position with a preferred start date of August 30, 2004. The salary is based on $31,000 -$35,000 per annum depending on experience, and a competitive benefits package is offered.
