The Conservator works in the Harvard University Library's Weissman
Preservation Center. The Conservator treats rare and unique
materials, including drawings, prints, maps, manuscripts, and books
prior to digitization, analog photography, or microfilming.  The
position reports to the HCL Glaser Conservator in the WPC.

Education, Experience, Skills: Required: Graduate degree in
conservation. Demonstrated excellence performing a range of
conservation treatments.  In-depth knowledge of the history of paper
and papermaking, and the history of drawing, writing, printing and
printmaking materials and techniques. Knowledge of historical book
structures, their deterioration and conservation. Working knowledge
of chemistry and materials science. Strong organizational skills,
including the ability to establish priorities and achieve goals.
Ability to initiate and adapt to change, analyze and solve problems,
to be flexible, and work collaboratively. Excellent oral and written
communication skills, including demonstrated ability to write
specifications, document treatments, and prepare reports. Preferred:
Experience working in a research library.

Those candidates invited to interview will be asked to submit a
portfolio representative of recent conservation treatments.

Duties, responsibilities: The HCL Conservator examines, develops
treatment specifications for, and treats (largely) unbound objects
on paper, vellum and other substrates--as well as three-dimensional
paper objects prior to their reproduction. Prepares condition and
treatment reports including photo documentation. Conducts condition
surveys, analyzes results, and assists in the development of action
plans. Consults on the provision of protective enclosures for
special collections. Contributes to the maintenance of vendor files,
the inventories of supplies and equipment, and the selection of
materials for the Center's resource library.
