Call number labels

I know it is okay to apply rare item call numbers to acid-free
strips or to the box enclosures containing the rare item but does
anyone have other ways to accomplish this. The institute is having
trouble with the rare item ID strips being too tall for their
shelving and trouble with the strips remaining in the bindings (some
of the bindings are spiral and pamphlets.)  Does anyone have other
ideas of how to deal with this problem?
