Cleaning firearms

Our Collections Manager would like general information on proper
cleaning techniques for firearms.  These arms date from the early
19th century through today, and conditions obviously vary.  They
consist of several types of materials including wood, metal and hard
plastics.  He is  curious about what is best for these weapons when
it comes to preserving them.  Any help or suggestions would be
greatly appreciated.
