Chemistry for Paper Conservators September 7-11, 2004 This chemistry course has been taught at Yale University and the National Archives of Canada, at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore in the Society of Archivists, England. The course is of five days duration divided each topic into two parts: first a teaching session, followed by practical laboratory work to back it up and consolidate. Day 1 Morning: Introduction the molecular view of materials Afternoon: Chemistry and materials,understanding energy, light and environment Day 2 Morning: Cleaning and organic solvents Afternoon: Polymers, adhesives and consolidants Day 3 Morning: Degradation and corrosion. Afternoon: Catalysts and rates of reaction. Day 4 Morning: Molarity, acids and bases Afternoon: Deacidification and alkaline reserve in paper Day 5 Morning: Skin materials and tannins Afternoon: Materials testing and analysis, question session The teacher: David Dorning book conservator qualified in chemistry Participants: 15 book and paper conservators Dates: September 7-11, 2004.
