The Kalmanovitz Library and the Center for Knowledge Management seek
a part-time, 50% Bookmender to serve as a Preservation Technician in
the Resources Management unit.

The incumbent will specify appropriate repair/conservation treatment
for books and journals and perform treatments up to unit standards
of neatness, accuracy, and efficiency, including binding repair,
preparation of textblocks for new cases, sewing textblocks, repair
of broken sewing, fan binding, making and repairing hinges, paper
treatments including repairs using paste, tissue and heat set, and
making protective enclosures. In addition, the incumbent will assist
in the physical preparation of material for the UC Bindery as
needed; perform environmental monitoring using a hygrothermograph
and psychrometer; and assist in emergency procedures for wet and
damaged material.

Required Qualifications: Some experience with book repair techniques
of bindings, textblocks, and paper; the ability to communicate and
work well with others.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with emergency salvage of wet
or damaged material; experience with environmental monitoring
equipment; experience with rare book repair; the ability to use a
computer, and knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.

Compensation: Base salary is $1,869 - $2,339 per month full time
rate, pro-rated to 50%. Starting salary usually in the lower end to
the middle of the range depending on experience and qualifications.
