ICCROM (International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and
Restoration of Cultural Property) <URL:http://www.iccrom.org> is
seeking to appoint a Project Specialist for the AFRICA 2009
programme.

ICCROM is an intergovernmental organization (created by UNESCO in
1956) with a mandate to raise the level of conservation of cultural
heritage worldwide. It has over 100 Member States. Its statutory
functions include the provision of technical advice and information,
professional education and training, and research. The AFRICA 2009
programme was launched at a meeting in Abidjan in 1998.  Its aim is
to increase national capacity in Sub-Saharan Africa for management
and conservation of immovable cultural heritage. The programme, a
partnership between African cultural heritage organizations, ICCROM,
the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, and CRATerre-EAG, wishes to
appoint a Project Specialist based at the secretariat at ICCROM in
Rome, Italy.  The post-holder will be expected to promote high
standards in this field by working with other staff, both at ICCROM
and at partner organizations, on the implementation of activities
carried out by AFRICA 2009 at the regional level.  These would
include regional courses, regional seminars, national seminars,
research projects, and networking activities.  Travel within Africa
will be required for the implementation of activities, sometimes for
extended periods of time.  He/she will work closely with ICCROM's
interdisciplinary professional staff and will report to the manager
of the programme.

Knowledge, skills and experience required: A university degree or
equivalent professional qualification in architecture, urban
planning, archaeology or a related field is required, along with 5
years of work experience in conservation of immovable cultural
heritage.  Excellent knowledge of French is essential and a working
knowledge of English is also required. Must have excellent teamwork,
managerial and communication skills.  Preference will be given to
previous participants of AFRICA 2009 activities, in particular its
annual regional courses.

Terms and benefits: The Project Specialist will be appointed for an
initial period of two years, with the first year being probationary,
and will be resident in Rome.  The net salary per year (inclusive of
a variable element for post adjustment) for this position is
equivalent to a P-2 level in the United Nations Staff Professional
Salary Scale, which currently (April 2004) corresponds to US$ 55,785
(without dependents) and US$ 59,474 (with dependents). Other
benefits are also provided. The salary and related benefits are net
of taxes but subject to various deductions, such as medical
insurance and contributions to the United Nations Pension Fund.
