Conservation Skills: Polychromed and Gilded Surfaces
September 4-17, 2004

This practical course is designed for those with experience of
gilding who wish to extend their understanding of particular
making techniques. Participants will have the opportunity to
create samples of decoration including press brokaat, pastiglia,
lustrework and sgraffito. The techniques for cutting, casting,
gilding and glazing, egg tempera, gesso and raised work, punch
work and cabouchons are all demonstrated. The course will
explore these combinations of precious metals and paint finishes
and provide an opportunity to discuss and compare options for
conservation. Participants may be painting or objects
conservators, or gilding specialists, who have little
opportunity to study traditional techniques and practice as they
    were done originally.

papermaking process, and identifying the characteristics and
behaviour of handmade paper on its own and in conjunction with
other materials Participants may be paper conservators,
bookbinders or object conservators wishing to improve their
