Rutgers University Libraries, Special Collections and University
Archives is seeking candidates for the position Head of
Preservation. Position number A3722.

Position Description: Reports to Head Special Collections, Rutgers
University Libraries. Directs the preservation program of the unit,
including the planning and evaluation of preservation needs from the
broad aspect of environmental conditions to the specific evaluation
of the physical condition of individual items. Performs preservation
treatment including book repair, pamphlet binding, paper flattening,
cleaning and mending, reformatting of fragile materials for
researchers, and protective enclosures for rare books, photographs,
maps, broadsides, and manuscript materials. Is also responsible for
preservation concerns of exhibitions in the Special Collections and
University Archives Gallery and Gallery '50 in the Alexander Library
(research library for the humanities and social sciences).

Position Requirements: Requires a master's degree, preferably in a
field such as library service, preservation/conservation, museum
studies or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Approximately five years of experience as an archivist, records
manager, conservator, preservation manager, or a related field which
includes bench work, managing projects, and training students and
interns, is required. Must have knowledge of and experience with
sophisticated equipment used in preservation treatments and
environmental monitoring including hygrothermographs, data loggers,
water alerts, fume hoods, digital cameras and scanners, and
ultrasonic encapsulators. Knowledge and skills related to
digitization of library materials is desirable.

Salary: Negotiable with a minimum of $45,753, plus full compensation
package including medical, dental, pension, and insurance benefits.
