Senior Archives Conservator National Library of New Zealand Te Puna Matauranga o Aotearoa Vacancy NL1699 Applications close: June 7, 2004 Salary: Band 6, NZ$47,794-$56,228 Conservation Services at the National Library of New Zealand is looking for an experienced archives conservator to join our team, which includes five other conservators working in the paper, books, sound and photographic materials speciality areas, as well as technical support staff. Senior Conservators are responsible for providing conservation management and treatment services for the Library collections, as well as leadership in the development of library conservation in New Zealand through support for the programs of the National Preservation Office, and participation in professional organisations and networks. The Senior Archives Conservator has particular responsibility for conservation management programs for the archival manuscript and cartographic collections of the Alexander Turnbull Library, including: * The Manuscript and Archives Collections: over 8 kilometres of non-government manuscripts and archives relating to New Zealand and the Pacific region. These include the papers of Maori, Pakeha and Pacific Island people active in all areas of New Zealand and Pacific life including discovery and exploration, land transactions, the arts and literature, politics, war, protest movements, religion, sciences, industrials relations and business. * The Cartographic Collections: over 54,000 manuscript and printed maps, atlases and digital records ranging from the 16th century to the present. The collection is concentrated on New Zealand, Pacific and Antarctic material, with examples of cartography from around the world. The full range of activities include: * Laboratory treatments, condition reports, materials testing, special packaging. * Exhibition and exhibition loan support and preparation. * Contributing to the management and development of the laboratory and unit. * Training and supervision of project conservators, technicians, and interns. * Training and advice for other National Library staff. * Working with curators and librarians to plan conservation programmes for collections. * Participation in disaster planning and salvage programs and projects. * Providing technical advice and assistance to reprographic staff and projects. * Providing advice on conservation to external organisations and individuals. The person we are looking for in this position should have: * At least 5 years practical experience in conservation in the library and archives sector. * Specific tertiary or equivalent in the conservation of archives formats including bound volumes, maps, manuscript, documents, and other modern archives media. * Experience in the conservation management of archival collections. * Enjoyment of the team approach to working relationships. * Good written and oral communication skills. A relocation allowance is negotiable for the successful candidate, should that individual be currently living outside of New Zealand.
