Subject: Removing asbestos backings
A collection of twentieth-century paintings on thin cardboard was mounted on cement asbestos board with an unidentified glue at some time in the 1970s. Although in general the asbestos remains in good condition, the gallery which owns the paintings would like to remove and dispose of it. Does anyone have any experience of the removal of asbestos backings and/or suggestions as to how it could be achieved while maintaining the safety of both the paintings and the conservator?
