Heritage Biocare 1st edition : An introduction to biological problems for museum, library, archive, gallery and cultural property staff June 23-26, 2004 Enrollment by e.mail Workshop in Conservation of tiles and tile pictures October 2004 October 6-9, 2004 Price: 500Euros Language:English with a Spanish translation This workshop will concentrate on the conservation and restoration of loose and mounted tiles and tile pictures. Some attention will be paid to the conservation of tiles in situ (fixed in walls). The conservation of tiles situated in the open air will not be covered. This course is suited to conservators with some experience in ceramic conservation. Day 1 Morning: 1.5 hours Lecture: Background information: * The composition, structure, technique, decoration and historical development of tiles. * Disintegration and damage--cause and recognition Preventive conservation of tiles: * Suitable environmental conditions * Storage and display * Handling and transport * documentation Afternoon: 3 hours Visit to tile collection * Practising documentation with tiles in collection Day 2 Morning: 1.5 hours Lecture: Conservation and restoration of tiles * techniques and materials * cleaning consolidation 1.5 hours Demonstration of salt testing and desalination and restoration materials Afternoon: 3 hours Practical: * salt testing and condition assessment * Treatment of objects Day 3 Morning: 1.5 hours Conservation and restoration of tiles techniques and materials used in restoration * bonding * filling * retouching 1.5 hours Demonstration of materials and techniques Afternoon: 3 hours Practical: treatment of objects Day 4 Morning: 1.5 hours * Specific problems in the conservation and restoration of tile-pictures and assemblages * Mounting techniques 1.5 hours Demonstration of mounting techniques.
