Subject: Call for papers--Wood and furniture conservation
First Call for Papers Seventh International Symposium on Wood and Furniture Conservation The Mechanics of Furniture To be held at the Stedelijk Museum CS in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. November 26-27, 2004 Mechanical parts in historical furniture and their restoration present unique problems to furniture conservators. Ranging from Roentgen's intricacies to the more basic principles of locks and hinges, they all confront us with different questions, problems and solutions. How did these mechanisms function? How and with what tools were they made? Should they be restored back to working order? The general themes of the conference will include: * The ethics of restoring mechanisms * The specific tools and machinery used to make the old mechanisms. Historical research of the technological developments involved * Exchange with neighbouring fields such as the conservation of clockworks, automata, objects of industrial heritage and musical instruments * The relevant laws of mechanics Topics of interest would be: * Case studies of restoration/conservation projects * Early mechanical tools needed for reproduction * Historical research on the matter Anyone wishing to present a paper is invited to submit a provisional title and an abstract of approximately 250 words by June 15, 2004 to: J.J.
