John W. and Mildred Bissinger Preservation Internship Washington State University, Pullman WA We are now seeking candidates for the 3rd Annual John W. and Mildred Bissinger Preservation Internship. The successful candidate will work as an Intern in the Preservation/Conservation Laboratory in Manuscripts, Archives and Special Collections (MASC) at Washington State University (Pullman, WA) under the supervision of Gudrun Aurand, Bookbinder/Conservator. May 15, 2004 is the deadline for application. The internship can take place between June 21 and August 20, 2004. Interns are expected to participate 35 hours a week for four weeks. A stipend of $ 1,400 will be provided. During the course of the Internship, participants will learn the fundamentals of book and paper repair. Outline: Structure of the sewn book Properties of paper Pamphlet bindings Protective enclosures Types of adhesives Types of mending papers The following procedures will be taught through demonstration and practice: Mending paper (tears, cuts, holes) Sewing pamphlets Fabrication of protective enclosures Apart form hands-on experience, the intern will: * Learn about different Binding Styles and have the opportunity to examine MASC collections * Become familiar with online preservation sites and discussion groups * Have the opportunity to meet with MASC Librarians to learn about preservation concerns in Archives collection management Interested applicants should also visit <URL:http://www.wsulibs.wsu.edu/holland/masc/conserve.htm>.
