This workshop will examine the problems and issues associated with
audio and video magnetic media in archival collections and suggest
practical strategies and solutions.  Topics will include
organization of digital archives, cataloguing and storage,
migration, and permanence.  Participants will have ample opportunity
to bring their particular questions and concerns to the table.

Richard Hess is in his twentieth year with National TeleConsultants
in Glendale, California.  As a Principal Consultant his
responsibilities include developing and evaluating alternate
technology strategies for modern high-end broadcast facilities.  In
the 1970s, Richard began his professional career as an Audio-Video
systems engineer for ABC-TV in New York City.  He is a member of the
Audio Engineering Society (including the Historical Committee and
the Technical Committee on Archives and Digital Libraries), The
Association of Moving Image Archivists (member of the preservation
committee), The Association for Recorded Sound Collectors, and the
National Fire Protection Association.  Richard transfers audio tapes
in his home studio in his spare time.
