    Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Head of
    Preservation the Preservation Field Service Librarian provides
    advisory support in the area of preservation for all libraries
    including but is not limited to:

    *   Designing and executing overall preservation assessments for
        collections;

    *   Developing with bibliographers or subject specialist
        conservation condition surveys with particular emphasis on
        school and department libraries.

    *   Developing and carrying out basic preservation education for
        students, library staff, faculty and researchers.

    *   Coordinating outreach for preservation within the libraries
        and university including the maintenance of preservation
        department web page, planning preservation exhibits,
        preservation awareness days, outreach packets, information
        posters etc.

    *   Serving as preservation reference contact both internally to
        the libraries and university and externally to the community

    *   Coordinating the environmental monitoring for all libraries
        across campus.

    *   Developing integrated pest management programs for all
        libraries across campus.

    *   Coordinating emergency response planning, updating and
        keeping current the emergency response plan, including
        working with the university's risk management office.

    *   Assisting in the development of preservation projects,
        either grant funded or long-term in-house funded projects.

    The Preservation Field Service Librarian participates actively
    in the Library's management, assessment, training, and
    development programs; contributes to implementing the mission of
    the Library; serves as a permanent member of the Preservation
    Committee and on Library and University committees as
    appropriate; and is active professionally.  The Preservation
    Field Service Librarian maintains professional affiliations in
    appropriate organizations and keeps abreast of the latest
    developments in preservation principles and procedures. Assists
    in developing and keeping current the department library and
    preservation information resources

    Qualifications: Master's degree in Library Science from an
    American Library Association accredited library school and
    advance certificate in preservation administration though
    significant work experience in preservation administration may
    replace certificate.  Demonstrated professional accomplishments
    and a minimum of two years of relevant professional experience
    are required for appointment at the Librarian II level, five
    years of experience and accomplishments for appointment to the
    rank of Librarian III.  Thorough knowledge of the wide range of
    preservation issues and current trends at the national and
    international level.  Experience in developing, designing and
    carrying out a wide variety of surveys and assessments and in
    developing and writing grants.  Excellent written and oral
    communication skills.  Please submit two writing samples (such
    as reports, articles, book reviews, etc) of 4-10 pages maximum
    in length with application.  Strong project management and
    interpersonal skills.  Strong computer skills able to work with
    the full range of applications such as word processing, database
    management and spreadsheets.  Preferred knowledge of web design
    and editing software.  Ability to work in a complex and changing
    environment with diverse staff and users. Experience in basic
    book repair techniques is desirable.

Assistant Chief Conservator

    The Yale University Library's Conservation Laboratory is one
    unit within the Preservation Department and is responsible for
    item level treatment and housing of rare and special materials.
    In addition to treatment, the lab provides support for exhibits
    and consults and provides leadership Library-wide on
    conservation issues such as the safe care and handling of
    non-circulating collections, emergency response and recovery,
    and provides information to the public on conservation practices
    at Yale University Library

    Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Chief Conservator
    plans and performs conservation treatment on the full range of
    special collection materials found in libraries and archives;
    assists in planning and directing the activities of the
    Conservation Laboratory including assuming the responsibilities
    for the conservation lab in the absence of the Chief
    Conservator.  The range of activities for the Assistant Chief
    Conservator may include:

    *   Training and supervising conservation staff, volunteers,
        students and/or interns;

    *   Assisting in managing and directing the flow of materials
        through the conservation laboratory;

    *   Assisting in the supervising a staff of professionals and
        support C&T staff

    *   Assisting in the setting of treatment priorities in
        consultation with collection specialists and curators;

    *   Advising on problems associated with environmental control,
        climate control and light levels in storage, exhibit, and
        reading areas

    *   Assisting with the advising of special collections staff on
        conservation principles and practices;

    *   Assisting with and overseeing the planning and installation
        of exhibits throughout the library system

    *   Providing recommendations to collections specialists and
        curators on whether to not objects should be acquired,
        loaned and/or exhibited; including advising on the handling
        and shipping of materials;

    *   Responsible for tracking materials and statistics and the
        maintenance of treatment records;

    *   Responsible for the maintenance of equipment and supplies

    *   Responsible for health and safety issues within the
        conservation lab

    *   Assisting in maintaining the emergency response plan and
        responding to emergencies as needed.

    The Assistant Chief Conservator participates actively in the
    Library's management, assessment, training, and development
    programs; contributes to implementing the mission of the
    Library; serves on Library and University committees as
    appropriate; and is active professionally.  The Assistant Chief
    Conservator maintains professional affiliations in appropriate
    organizations and keeps abreast of the latest developments in
    conservation principles, techniques, and procedures.

    Qualifications: Master's degree in Conservation, Materials
    Science, Library Science (ALA-accredited program), or related
    field, and four years conservation experience; or an equivalent
    combination of education and experience. Comprehensive knowledge
    of chemistry and book history and history of library materials
    in general. Significant conservation treatment record as
    demonstrated by a portfolio of work in the area of library and
    archival materials. Comprehensive knowledge of conservation
    principles for a wide variety of materials preservation, and of
    conservation techniques and procedures, as demonstrated through
    previous relevant experience in a research or academic
    institution. Strong communication and analytical skills; the
    ability to work independently and with others; developed
    organizational and supervisory skills; the ability to excel in a
    dynamic team environment; strong computer skills.

Paper Conservator

    The Yale Map Collection is a part of the Yale University Library
    and has the largest collection of maps in Connecticut and one of
    the largest university collections in the United States. Its
    collections are geographically comprehensive and consist of over
    200,000 map sheets, 3,000 atlases, and 900 reference books. The
    Collection receives maps and charts on deposit from the U.S.
    government agencies, and through gift and purchase. The
    Collection also houses approximately 15,000 rare (pre-1850)
    sheet maps. Though these cover many areas of the world, most
    pertain to North America, the United States, and New England.
    There is also a sizeable reference collection and a small,
    selective serials collection.

    Responsibilities: Under the general direction of the Yale
    University Library's Chief Conservator and in consultation with
    the Map Curator the map conservator plans and performs
    conservation treatment on the full range of flat paper materials
    found in the Map Collection; assists in planning strategies for
    collection care working with the Chief Conservator and when
    appropriate the Collections Care Librarian; recommends proper
    housing and storing of collections; assists in the teaching of
    conservation techniques and methods; and assists in the response
    to emergencies as needed.

    The map conservator participates actively in the Library's
    management, assessment, training, and development programs;
    contributes to implementing the mission of the Library; serves
    on Library and University committees as appropriate; and is
    active professionally.  The map conservator maintains
    professional affiliations in appropriate organizations and keeps
    abreast of the latest developments in conservation principles,
    techniques, and procedures.

    Qualifications: Master's degree in Conservation, Materials
    Science, Library Science (ALA-accredited program), or related
    field, and minimum two years conservation experience; or an
    equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated
    professional accomplishments and a minimum of two years of
    relevant professional experience are required for appointment at
    the Conservator II level, four years of experience and
    accomplishments for Conservator III. Professional
    accomplishments demonstrated through a portfolio of conservation
    treatment work in the area of archival materials and art on
    paper. Thorough knowledge of chemistry and artists materials and
    techniques, and history of library materials in general.
    Thorough knowledge of conservation principles for a wide variety
    of materials preservation, and of conservation techniques and
    procedures, as demonstrated through previous relevant experience
    in a research or academic institution. Strong communication and
    analytical skills; the ability to work independently and with
    others; the ability to excel in a dynamic team environment;
    strong computer skills.

The Preservation Department: Yale University Library's Preservation
