Symposium on restoration of the Phoebe Anna Traquair murals

From: Ailsa Murray <ailsa.murray>
Date: Monday, March 8, 2004
A symposium is being held at the Mansfield Traquair Centre, 15
Mansfield Place, Edinburgh, Scotland on March 27, 2004 from 10)30am
to 12:30pm on the past, present and future of the murals in this
building. Phoebe Anna Traquair, a leading member of the Arts and
Crafts Movement in Britain, designed and created this vast scheme of
painted walls and ceilings between 1893 and 1901. The symposium will
begin with an introduction by the Chairman of Mansfield Traquair
Trust, Dr. Duncan Thomson on the story so far, followed by Dr.
Elizabeth Cumming, the foremost expert in this field, who will speak
on the murals and their place in the work of the Arts and Crafts
Movement. Presentations will then be given by the conservators from
Historic Scotland on the current preliminary phase of the
conservation programme. The final item will be by The Friends of
Mansfield Traquair Centre on their experience of guiding visitors
and seeing incomers' reaction to the murals, before and after
treatment.

Tickets are UKP10 for full members of the Friends, UKP8 for
concession members and UKP12 for all non members. Those joining The
Friends on the day will get the appropriate refund. The proceeds will
go to the fund for restoring the murals. Applications, with a cheque
made out to FMTC should be sent to, with a stamped addressed
envelope, to:
